Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims' graves, in remote Dread's Hand, Alaska.
It's not even a town; more like the bad memory of a town. The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest.
But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what's in the woods from coming out. He finds no closure because no one can explain exactly what happened to Danny.
And the more he searches for answers, the more he finds himself becoming part of the mystery . . .

Malfi (The Night Parade) never quite takes this vivid horror-thriller over the top. Paul Gallo’s twin brother, Danny, has been missing for over a year. He was last seen in Dread’s Hand, an old mining town in the boonies of Alaska. Now, out of the blue, Dread’s Hand is in the news because of a bizarre series of homicides. Paul follows his brother out to Dread’s Hand to see whether Danny is one of the victims. Once there, Paul realizes that there’s more going on in Dread’s Hand than a one-off series of killings: the tiny hamlet has a reputation of unexplained grisly deaths that goes back more than 100 years, and Paul is convinced that Danny has somehow become caught up in it. Malfi’s creepy prose is stolidly workmanlike, with plentiful hair-raising enigmas and copious gore, but it’s lacking the depth of emotion that would raise it to the truly terrifying. Agent: Cameron McClure, Donald Maass Literary.

A missing brother, a superstitious Alaskan town, and a serial killer come together for an eerie story that keeps one checking over one's shoulder. Charles Constant's narration makes the listener feel simultaneously reassured and uncomfortable. While female voices are not strongly defined, male characters stand out as unique and believable. Constant's steady, calm delivery adds to the ambiance of the story. As the main character is drawn deeper into the Alaskan wild, the listener travels the same path, thanks to Constant's narration, never exactly sure if madness or evil is lurking and whose truth should be trusted.
